Default Just got visual studio 2008, now i need some books!

HI,

i just got the full visual studio 2008 for free through dreamspark (if anyone doesnt already know about that, microsoft is providing free software to students!)

so now i need a decent book or two to get me going. Since its what i use in my computing class, visual basic is the way to go (although its version 6.0 we use in college, not 2008). Do you think it could get a bit confusing using both 6.0 and 2008? My end goal is to eventually progress to some form of the C language.

anyway, anybody got any good book recomendations, available in the uk please. cheers

Yes, you will get confused between 6.0 and 2008 but it is the same syntax and basic concept. 2008 uses the .NET libraries while 6.0 uses the MFC libraries. You should go to the local bookstore and look at the VS08 books. Read a couple of pages and see which author can get you interested the longest. Some of these books are very dry and boring which makes them hard to read. It is important to find one that keeps you turning the pages.

guess people dont really care around here. In 3 shops all i found was a microsoft book about c# 2005. Nothing for any new stuff at all, or even visual basic.NET

looks like i'll just have to stick to my vb 6.0 for a while, if only that was available to students on dreamspark.

I've always liked the Murach books.
Amazon.com: Murach's Visual Basic 2008: Anne Boehm: Books
That one is more of an overview of VB08, and they have others that are for more specific areas in VB08.

If you are looking for a C# book this is a great one I just picked up at Borders. Amazon.com: C# Complete: Sybex: Books
It has a little blurp about VS .NET, but it is has everything about the C# language.

I don't tend to like the Dummies books. I find them dull and lifeless. I do like the Sams series, though.
