Visual Basic Help: Sound, and key assigning

Hello,
I am working on a final project for my programming I class, and I think that I am going to synthesize a sort of virtual drum set. The plan is that when it is all done, I will assign somehow a certain key to a certain sound, I don't know if this is possible, but it would be great if I could somehow assign say the "k" key for a bass drum kick.

Does anyone know how I could do this?
If not, does anyone have any other ideas for my project?

Yes you can use the API GetKeyState or GetAsyncKeyState

It's been so long since I've used VB at all.
I know that this isn't .NET or whatever, I don't even know what that means, so will your stuff still work?

Well I use that API in VB 6.0 Professional edition.
