Side projects is definitely the way to go.
You need to pay attention in all of your lectures, and complete all of your assignments. But this will only give you qualifications - it will not teach you how to program.
To learn how to program, you have to just do it. Find something that you want to make in your spare time (for me, it was games) and just try to do it! You will get stuck, and think that certain things are too hard - that's what this website is for (like you said).
Also, summer jobs and internships are a really good way of getting experience and working with other programmers to see hwo they do things differently to you.
