Hello, is it possible to create a website that can receive a command/word from the user, and then search other websites for a file associated with that word? The file it provides would be based on selecting the file based on a set of pre-defined criteria. So the site would have to perform scanning/selecting actions in the background while outputting simply the file result to the user. Can a site perform these background operations such as scanning other sites then selecting a file? If not possible in Java, what language is recommended? I'm very excited to read your replies, thank you.

As this is in the Javascript (and HTML/CSS) forum I assume you are referring to Javascript as Java up there. In this case, you are free to use asynchronous communication using AJAX (Asynchronous Javascript and XML). This allows people to make status bars for example where a website performs a background task while awaiting completion, or instant messengers, or something of which can scan for files and retrieve them.

If you need any low level access to the server AJAX can communicate with a PHP script by passing queries (i.e. retrieve "get.php?query=" + getElementById("filename").text, an extremely basic example, but..) and have the PHP script return something you can display such as data that can be parsed or HTML.

All new problems require investigation, and so if errors are problems, try to learn as much as you can and report back.
