Are you talking about operating systems concepts in general? or about the system monitor you see in your mac or windows?

If it directly interacts with you is a program, but obviously it gets the data trough the kernel.

Java is generally NOT a good choice for a language to do system monitoring. It's designed to not do the sorts of things that a system monitoring tool would need to do.

Programming is a branch of mathematics.

Very extensible with mono.

Do you want suggestions for coding a desktop application in Java?

If so, something about office documents? like excel, word, etc. Java has a great library to work them up

Shakya,

A little big change of scope, wasn't it?

About geolocation, neighbooring, etc. You could use google maps, and here you can how to use it with java.

Google maps has already commerce tagging capabilities, but about ordering from menues... you will need to subscribe the restaurants to your system, and make them update them.

My personal choice would be to study Minix ( a mini Linux )

In his book, Tanenbaum shows both, theory and code of Designing Operating Systems.

Look at OpenSUSE that's a good place to start (from my experience)
