Assuming Am trying to write a php online chat  application. How can one make money from that application.

Is from the user accessing the site or from the internet service provider via negotiation with the site owner.

. eg. They are some site when you login to access their application, they either deduct your money or reduce your data plan.

This deduction is from the site owner or from the ISP on behalf of the site owner.

Please i need emphasis as it will help me to know how to build my thesis/projects.

if the deduction is from the site owner, can you please provide a tutorial link on that via php or perl.

Thank you.

You can sell the Chat Application or you can make subscription plans and make a code that can be embedded on other's website. The ISP won't pay anything, the owner of the website will. The visitors won't be glad to pay to access a chat application, so the only two methods are the ones I told you above.

You can understand the code, but you can't understand the world.

For a chat application I would say advertisements will be your main source of income.

Noone will pay for subscriptions for a chat application, because there are too many other free alternatives.

You're right, but you can implement some functions that others don't have.

A website can only generate revenue two ways:

1) users pay for access/enhancements

2) Advertisers pay for views/clicks

Access is a simple "Pay $2/month for secure chat" or some such.

Enhancements can be "Pay $.50 for custom avatar/group chat/remove ads" etc

Advertising is pretty self-evident.

I forgot a third way, you sell some other product as a result of users coming to your site. Example: "Buy our product here!" sites.
