A problem that occurs when my PHP script sends out e-mail receipts is that what appears as an ® on our website's product page gets to their inbox as a Ž. I checked but could not find any similarity in alt code or HTML code. So what's going on? How can I ensure that if ® is in the name, it stays that way?

This sounds as a encoding problem between normal encoding and UTF-8 encoding. Easiest is to make sure everything uses UTF-8.
