I wouldn't skip on the monitor. I find screen real-estate is the biggest issue I run into. With that said, an i3 with at least 4G of RAM should be plenty. To be honest, anything you can play a few fun games on will do the job.

I wouldn't even worry about memory, you can turn around buy it so cheap on the market.

Why spend more than you have to? **, if you don't buy that laptop, I will. :P
