How to make a computer controlled light show for less than 40$ | Digg Topnews

I don"t have alot of money...I am thinking about going this route...

What would you advise?

Don't know how feasible it is to get the cost down under $40, but I would suggest you think about using an Arduino. They can be bought usually anywhere between $20 and $40, and are programmable in C. They have varying numbers of I/O pins, depending on which model you get, which can be used to turn your lights on and off. The Arduino can't source or sink very much current by itself, so you'd have to build some additional circuitry to power the actual lights, such as power transistors or relays.
