Hey Guys!
I am not new to programming, but have not done much of it in almost 10 years! I have a good friend who is opening up his own business and I have agreed to help him out with making him some software! I do have a degree in programming, but after graduating went more into the networking and tech support line then the programming.
I am also now a converted mac user, so I would like to develop it on mac, but I can do bootcamp if needed.
The program required is a quoting system, parts lookup, Cross reference quotes, etc. His main concern is speed, he wants it to be practically instant when he searches for parts (he will have probably 50,000 parts eventually).
A part of me just wants to use MS access with a Visual Basic front end, it will do what he needs, be quick and easy to use and easy to develop.
However i'd really like it to be a web based program but am concerned about speed?
What would you guys suggest for something like this? I have very little web development experience but love a new challenge.
Thanks for any help you may be able to offer.
Mike

Since you already know VB, the transition to ASP.NET using VB.NET might be the easiest path. If you want to start clean, there are many options. As far as speed, ASP.NET beats Java.

Welcome to CodeCall.
If you want speed, you can learn assembly language :D. But yet, if you want web development, assembly language is a horrible choice, because of its lack of portability. If it was me doing this I'd probably experiment with different languages and see which one runs fastest.
Are you guys going to use a database for storing the parts or do you guys prefer files?

Welcome to codecall, Tennyis!
Perfection of means and confusion of ends seem to characterize our age. Albert Einstein
