C language - are these out of date commands?

Hi

I am a newbie, and have been working through the C for dummies book, which i actually think for the beginner is a really good book!
Im just wondering about a few of the commands that are used in the book - and if they still have value? im talking about things like ATOI GETCHAR GETS ( probably a couple more)
its just that in another book on C i had these were not mentioned??

anyone else using the dummies book

Why wouldn't they have value? They are part of the C standard library. To my knowledge, they won't be replaced.
