I suggest to get the book of SAMS javascript tutorial but I would suggest more to learn from http://w3schools.com 
because it offers a good set of tutorial for javascript plus they have a feature called "Try" where you can try the code

Read books from For Dummies or Deitel, they are very goods... if you dont want to buy, just find the ebook form of them on the Internet )
