I suggest to get the book of SAMS javascript tutorial but I would suggest more to learn from http://w3schools.com :) because it offers a good set of tutorial for javascript plus they have a feature called "Try" where you can try the code :)

Read books from For Dummies or Deitel, they are very goods... if you dont want to buy, just find the ebook form of them on the Internet :))
