Hello everyone, so formally I am not a student of programming or computer science but instead a student of mathematics. However, after considering my options upon graduation, I think that computer programming/software engineering would be the best fit for me. And one of the areas that I am instantly drawn to is graphics and 3D modeling, both because it seems to be one of the most math intensive areas of programming, but also because I used to spend a lot of time with Bryce 2-5 in my younger years and I think it would be really interesting and challenging to be involved with such projects as a career.
So I was wondering if some of you here are involved in this type of programming work, and if so what it's like, whether it's enjoyable and fulfilling, and what you think of it as an industry. Also even if you don't program in this area I'd still love to hear your opinions on this industry and this type of programming in general. Thanks =].

I got my Masters in math and taught for a while before I got into programming. It's a lot of fun. There's a lot of fairly boring stuff, but there's a desperate need for people with stats skills who can produce code. You may want to check out the source code for Blender, too :)

I'm currently trying to write code for 3D animation; it uses XML as an intermediate storage format, and JavaScript is the language I'm using to write it. I know JavaScript is a light-weight language, but it's an easy language, especially with the dynamic variables and objects that can be used there. Also the canvas element (though not supported in Internet Explorer, but whatever) is nice help.
It's pretty fun for me, and I especially like the algorithm/process I call Optic Tangent Transform (OTT; :D that's what I call it, though it's not a documented standard or anything :D:) ). OTT is the algorithm that takes 3D graph coordinates and converts them to screen coordinates (2D), as they would actually appear when rendered.
I'm currently working on more ideas and plans, which would hopefully make things better, but I don't want to give away too much about everything, because I don't want this - what I'm doing - to be open-source.

3D Computer Graphics Software now so demand..............
Yeah, especially with television technology getting better, people watching TV more, ... Also some people play computer/video games, most of which are 3D, I think. I don't do game programming, so I can't tell much about that.
