Hi,
I've worked from a family run business for 14 years. 10 of which I was in operations the last 4 since returning from school I've worked in IS as a programmer. We work in Synergy(like cobol), .NET, PHP, Silverlight. The company is trying to move of Cobol and into a Windows environment. They recently hired a project manager, the manager is supposed to......get us into a Window's environment. No small feat after 30+ years of building around Cobol. After 3 months this PM has learned next to nothing about our industry and in my opinion added nothing to the development cycle. Still asking the basic of questions, hasn't provided the programmer a single documents with specs, hasn't picked up any of our technical documents. I finally had enough and advised he it was impossible for me to "pour" 10 years worth of business knowledge into her head. Pick up the regulations, technical docs we all did and start learning. Several days later she is attempting to pull the plug on a process I've been working on for several months. In short a redesign of a process that currently required human intervention, to a non human intervention process. My co workers and I made a cash cow for the company. Proof of concept has been delivered, development still needs work, polishing and testing. But it works, works better than intended actually. Several days later she attempts to pull the plug the project,. she succeeded in knocking it down to almost the bottom of the project list. Years worth of study and work, because she can't see the merits???
I wrote a "memo" directly to the owners of our company, venting my concerns on the direction the PM is taking development. I think she will waste a lot of time and money, correction I know she will waste a lot of money. If the owners don't care to react I am seriously considering leaving to start development work on my own system.
Any of you ever embark on your own?
Eric

Ash, I am not a programmer, but am looking for one. I have had an idea for far too long, but not in the mode of teaching myself programming. I currently have a very large and very well known Fortune 100 company willing to listen to my idea. Upon introduction of myself, I let them know that I was not coming up to their Corporate with a business plan, marketing plan, etc. I was simply going to run the idea by them, and if they liked it, then perhaps motions would occur. I did of course let them know I would need a NDA signed and witnessed. It seems I threw the cart in front of the horse so to speak, as I do not have a working model to present. But again, it was merely an idea I wanted to throw out there with someone in the Corporate world, especially those whose operations evolve around E commerce. What I am looking for first of all is a down to earth, intelligent, common sense minded individual who knows what "sweat equity" is. I say this because I am not able to pay one a salary just yet. The one who understands about "sweat equity" and respects it, as this is what this country was built upon, then a partnership would be formed. I have an open door right now with a very good company that the whole world knows. As for the type of programming, I believe it is PHP, XML, Java. I could be missing one, but from what I have researched, this comes close. I cannot go into full detail about the project, but I will tell you that the model needed to build would entail (Shopping Cart Technologies, data integration, market reporting, sales reporting, payment gateways, financial accounting, shipping, CRM, and a couple more). What I am going to do is talk to this company next week that has interest in learning of the idea, and let them know I need more time. Being that the President/CEO is "somewhat" known to me, I believe he will give me all the time needed, but not wishing to test the patience either. So if you are interested in pursuing something that is not yet offered in the E Commerce arena, that will bring new customers fairly quickly, let me know. If the project is planned and programmed efficiently with a strong understanding of E Commerce processes and various business models that coexist in this environment, we would set the world on fire, not literally lol. I would prefer someone to be located in central Florida as this is where I reside, but if not feasible for the "right" person, I will make a flight to discuss. If you are not interested, but maybe know someone who might be, let me know that as well please. Thanks, Dan
