After stumbling over Slashdot for the first time in a few days, I had seen an article about a DIY'er creating a privacy screen that looks something like this:

I thought: "That is simply fantastic."

How does it work?

It works due to the layout of an LCD display. The top polarizing layer filters light of a specific polarity (from the crystals) so that we can see what is within the large array of white. If we open the monitor and strip this layer out, and put it on a pair of glasses - only you can "decode" what the display is trying to output.

Some caveats however:
  • More permanent DIY, can restrict the viewing angle
  • There may be a possibility that one person with polarized (sun)glasses may be able to view glimpses - No "homework" in public.
