Hey guys,

So I've decided to start learning Ruby and was wondering if anyone could suggest a few places to start. I am not new to programming; I have a degree in software engineering and am very familiar with software design, implementation and testing, especially OO systems. I would prefer sources which are relatively up-to-date and are known for their quality. I don't particularly like to learn from tutorials from online websites as many of them are written by people who pump out "working code" with little (or no) regard to engineering principles such as design and maintainability.

I'm not trying to bash online communities here; I appreciate them for quick reminders and some simple implementations and solutions, but I prefer not to base my learning on tutorials that anyone could have written. I hope you can see where I'm coming from.

Cheers guys, thanks in advance for any pointers.

Congratulations for your degree in software engineering. :thumbup1:
I have a dream to get degree on computer science too, but could I? :crying:

We can learn documentation in Ruby website.
If you don't want to learn from online source, so go to offline.
In library, there are good programming handbooks and written by good people in programming.

Good luck.

If you want a resource that will help teach you how to go face-first into a language, you could try 7 Languages in 7 Weeks, which includes a week on Ruby. The canonical resource, of course, would be here: Documentation
Programming is a branch of mathematics.

Thanks Panther, it definitely looks interesting. I'll check it out on the weekend!
