I've noticed the emails are different now when a user replies to a thread you are subscribed to.
Before, the reply was inside of the email but now it just states that a user has replied and where to locate the thread.

Any reason for this?

If it is not a setting within the user control panel, it could be anything (update to save bandwidth, or something modified in the time being.)

You will have to query Roger if he knows.*

Alexander.

* Edit, I have directed him to this thread.

Hey, I noticed that too. But it doesn't make much use if the email tells you what the post is about, anyway, because you still have to log in to this forum anyway, or else you won't stay up to date on that thread.

I don't really mind this new email format.

* * *

But I like how Facebook does things; I mean, you can reply to a comment thread, on Facebook, by replying to the email that Facebook sent you.

I used it because I'm mainly away from the pc and have my phone in my pocket to check a reply. I liked it.
Different strokes for different folks. I'll check the control panel and see if there is an option.

@lethalwire: Thanks for your feedback on this. The reason I removed the content is because I read somewhere that most of the "newly" active members on forums stop coming back if they're able to see the response to their initial question in the email notifications. If you'll notice, sometimes you write back to someone who needed help, but then they never log on again (to read or to respond). The thread then stalls and dies. The idea is that if they're back on the site to read the response, then they're also more likely to respond... and maybe ask another question.

Another reason is that since the notification only goes out once per update per subscribed thread until next visit, they will not see any subsequent notifications. This, again, kills off any thread activity.

Lastly, I'm trying this thing out to see if it improves user engagement. So far, it seems to be driving more returns on threads, but I'll need some time to get more data. Do you mind putting up with this test for a bit to see if it improves the overall user experience? In the long run

As for the email notification, what do you normally do after you see the response on your phone? Do you still keep the email and reply to it once you're back on the PC? I'm currently investigating getting the vBulletin mobile app, so that most users can easily respond from a smart-phone (https://www.vbulleti...x.php?do=mobile). Would you find something like this useful? More importantly, would you pay $1 for something like this? Or would you want it for free?

@RhetoricalRuvim: I'm glad you see the benefit of returning visitors. This is more dramatic for new users than veterans like your and lethalwire.

As for the FB comment, I just check vBulletin and they just came up with a beta FB app (https://www.vbulleti...?do=facebookapp). I'll do some experiment to see how it can be incorporate within Codecall.

Thanks for your comments! Keep them coming.

After I see a response on my phone I'll usually log in with my phone's browser and respond, or sometimes wait until later in the evening when I'm at my desktop to respond. In either case, I come back! :D I can see how removing this feature from the email can bring more traffic back to the website though.

An app for the forum would be great as it would greatly ease process of needing to log in from a mobile browser.

As far as the $1 goes, I'd have to ask why the $1? Because the mobile app for the forum also costs $?

Mobile app would be nice. When I am not at home, I sometimes check email from my kindle. But I can't use the link that comes with the email, because the kindle doesn't support multiple windows/tabs, so I like that the settings page has links to threads with unread posts.

Going to see how this test works. If it's not drastically better, I'll revert by next weekend.

Yes, the mobile app would make it easier for most people to respond. It'll also help with some moderation tasks.

As for the $1, I was thinking, besides having to purchase the app, I will also need to maintain a Apple Appstore license to release it. I guess I can release a free version and have it ad supported. I'm still debating.

Thanks. I'm going to work on these stuff during my next chunk of free time. Right now, I'm knee deep in a few projects, so am just planning things out before I can really dive it.

I'm fine with paying $1 for these reasons. I wonder if the app can easily be converted to a phone running the android os. I'm currently on an iPhone, but I'm just curious.

Or the other thing that can be done is for it to stay this way for new people, but have it send the messages to others. This is just an idea.

Based on vBulletin site, they can generate apps for both Android and iOS. :) I would prefer to release them both.

Yes, I thought about having it this way, but it's actually a change to the emailing template. As far as I know, I can't have any logic like that in the vBulletin email templates.
