Depends, most of the time you pay less if you pay yearly.
But if their service start to become unstable, you are stuck when them for the year.
If your good with number, you should take monthly, invest the rest of the money, and it will become cheaper... well if you know how to invest :P

If you have tested your company and trust it as yourself you can pay for 1 year in advance. But in any case that is recommended to start with month to month subscription.

If you pay yearly, you will save a good sum of money for creating your future projects.
So, you need to be 100% sure in reliability of a web host.

If you are trying to choose the host you don't know, pay for the 1st month and if they are reliable, you can pay for the whole year then.

No doubt monthly payment is much more safe than yearly.. the company can play 'disappear' and the money pay for the year will be lost!

I pay yearly. I only choose reputable hosting companies that aren't likely to 'disappear' or take my money. Also, it helps if they have a refund policy such that, should I cancel before my year is up, they refund the amount for the unused portion of the year.

So just depends. If you have a good hosting company and you trust them, save money by paying for a year up front.

I am 100% sure that you should pay for one month, see if they are reliable and also have nice reputation, choose yearly payment option.
