I think I might like to design a website where users can sign up and set up a personal profile, nothing to fancy maybe just a bio box and other personal display info like profile picture etc. The more intricate part is that I want user to be able to create lobbies where they can put passwords on them and have other players join in and talk over mic. Sorta like a gaming lobby, but not for games, just a lobby for talking and listening to music. Also I'd like a friends list function where you can add another users and send private IMs too.
Anyways I'm not a programmer and I'm just wondering what something like that would cost to build?
I also have another question but I'm not sure this is the right forum section. I'd like a program designed that's like PDF. I don't know if that's possible or what but if this is or isn't the right section for program design please let me know.
Thanks :)

Hello,
If you want the user to talk over mic, your gonna need a streaming server. flash media server or red5 can do the tricks. But this is not cheap. You most likely need a dedicated server or at least a vps server.
There is some web conference tool that already exist, but once again, they can be pretty pricy.
As far as I know, this project can be hard to do, your gonna need to know some java (for red5) some flash/actionscript (for the user interface) and most likely some php/mysql...

Thanks for the info, but I don't wanna program it myself I'll definitely hire the programmers I need for the job. Do you know of any forums where professional programmers hang out so I can get some kind of price quot on the work or is this the right place?

Business Web application design is too often neglected. I see a lot of applications that don’t meet the needs of either businesses or users and thus contribute to a loss of profit and poor user experience. It even happens that designers are not involved in the process of creating applications at all, putting all of the responsibility on the shoulders of developers.
This is a tough task for developers, who may have plenty of back-end and front-end development experience but limited knowledge of design. This results in unsatisfied customers, frustrated users and failed projects.
So, we will cover the basics of user interface design for business Web applications. While one could apply many approaches, techniques and principles to UI design in general, our focus here will be on business Web applications.
