I work for an eCommerce company and we are looking at having employees from around the country log-in remotely to do production work.

We have ways of simply letting them log on remotely through IE but we want to take things a step further

We would like to have the ability to limit what employees have access to what files and programs by handing out log in names and passwords that provide them just what they have access to when they log in

I have been referred to the Barracuda VPN SSL in the past

Does anyone else have any other recommendations / suggestions?

Why not looking into OpenVPN? It's free, though may require more effort to configure.

I manage a team of remote workers too and yes, OpenVPN is good for files.

But, in addition to that I monitor each one of them using a time tracking software.

That way I would know the exact time they work, the tasks they do and even the sites they visit while on their computers. It helps keep me assured that there is no time wasted at work.

When they connect, they'll be requesting an IP address from your DNS. It sounds like some logging software to monitor the computers on your network can handle the rest.

As a side note, at my job, I can do a lot of work while off the network, so when working from home, I may not ever get on the work network, yet be very productive.
