Hi. I just joined this forum moments ago.

I am a student in NJ (that's in USA for you foreigners ;) ). I was a medium level applications programmer for a while, but went back to school for a math degree. But since I was a programmer, my adviser seems to think I can help one of his other students (whose research is related to mine) with a massive rename in BASH. I searched Google, but could not come up with a script close enough to what I need. I don't really have time to learn BASH scripting and (I think I'll need) regexp and this looks like a good site, so I joined here and posted in the BASH/Scripting forum.

Oh, and I will need to get more familiar with BASH and Linux since my research is being done on a huge (by 1990s standards) Gentoo Linux cluster. So I probably won't be a one-time take-the-script-and-run poster.
