I know some PHP,HTML/CSS, and javascript. I'm looking to learn Java. If any beginners/intermediate users have an opinion on the books/websites they used I would like to hear it. Veterans are welcome too. It's just that Google searches usually turn up with your opinions and I was hoping to get the opinion of someone who just finished their book. How did you like reading it? Where do you feel it left you skill level wise? etc.
Thanks! I look forward to being part of this community.

Howdy!
Thinking In Java (4th Ed.) by Bruce Eckel is a great authority. It jumps right in, starts from the beginning, and explains some of the fundamentals of object orientated programming. Kind of comes off as lecture-style on occasion, but sometimes that's the best way to have the information fed to you, I've found. :D
Head-First-Java is a book that I hear recommended often. My experience with it is good, though it can sometimes be a bit overbearing. It's very, very informal and doesn't throw too much in your face at one time. It comes with a lot of puzzles and the like, which you can take or leave.
I recently got Java The Complete Reference (8th Ed.), which came out this month, I believe. We'll see about this one!
