Personally, I use Outlook for this. I'm sure there's an open source version that has the same functionality. Maybe somebody can post their favorite one. Try looking at what Mozilla has.

Mozilla Sunbird!
Mozilla Sunbird®
You could have a more outlook like experience using Thundirbird, I think version 3 has the Sunbird integration by default, but if I'm wrong, you can simply download it as an addon

I usually use Thunderbird with the Lightning extension, but Task Coach is also an excellent tool, with the ability to export to Thunderbird.

I use Google desktop which though takes time for first time indexing (may be two days to access and index my entire hard drive)
But then i can search any file / past email with in a couple of seconds in a much better and real manner along with supporting *'s in any place that i don't remember.
There are plenty of cool looking gadgets of personal use, I have a pretty comprehensive planner, scratch pad, scheduler, power and memory meter and a favorites extractor from you tube. The only things to worry about, it eats a good deal of memory so you need a powerful system (3GB or more would be great and you won't even feel it) and you should have a decent sized screen since it's real use like in having it docked on the side of desktop.
Personally i find it a lot smarter than outlook's or any other tools features. For e.g. in my official work outlook, i have google desktop search bar and i often compare it's search results with those of outlook. The difference is very obvious.

I'm trying Thunderbird right now and it seems like a great planner.
I'm guessing the alerts don't appear unless the application is open though.
Do you use this addon by chance?:

Agreed on the Thunderbird + Lightning!
The same is true for Outlook however; that the notifications will not show up, if Outlook isn't running. So that's not really a weakness.

I don't use that addon. I'm usually good with just clicking on the minimize button on Thunderbird. When I'm at work, it's ALWAYS open, anyway, since I have to be available to customers via email.
I for one commend your ability to use Thunderbird at work. I love Thunderbird. But I haven't been able to kick Outlook for work, any further than a bad habit...

I despise Outlook. I'm fortunate to have an SMTP/POP3 mail server at work, so it makes things easier.
