Hi everyone,
I'm having a bit of a problem with some components. I have an AMD X4 940 processor along with an Elitegroup AM2+ motherboard. Whenever I attempt to turn the system on, the CPU fan spins for about 1.5 seconds and then the whole system shuts down. However, when I take the 4-pin motherboard processor power connector out, the CPU fan stays on, but of course it won't boot without the 4-pin connector.
The RAM and power supply work just fine (confirmed this on another system).
What do you guys think? Motherboard short? Processor has gone bad? I'm not sure which one I should RMA. They're only about a year old and are still under warranty.
Any opinions are appreciated.

From experience I would personally place it that the processor is improperly mounted along with the fan, had you applied thermal paste between the heat spreader and the processor? Is it getting dry and cracked up?
There have been a few occasions where the heat sink was not completely against the processor and temperatures got past 200c, which in that case the computer should shut down.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, the thermal paste is fresh, and the plate is making good contact with the CPU. I can't tell how hot the CPU is getting because I can't reach BIOS. It's strange. I guess I'll be RMA'ing both the board and the CPU just to play it safe.

Is the CPU fan attached to the motherboard properly? Many motherboards go into panic mode with no detectable CPU heat sink.
Please, write clearly with proper structure. Double spacing makes the text feel un-jointed, Capitalizing Every Word Means People Stop Before Every Word Sub-Consciously Which Is A Pain In The Backside, and use code tags! (The right most styling box).

The fan spins, the BIOS usually halts the processor and says CPU FAN ERROR! which can be turned off. I wouldn't think it'd restart automatically unless there is a setting to do so.
