Wordpress has the ability to blog/write articles, including a "CMS" feature. You can create logins for your students to keep grades private for example, just seems to fit what you are asking for.

I agree that WP seems like a great fit for your website. I have a blog on WP and you can do almost anything you want. The logins for students is a great idea. I hope it turns out great!
