I'd also recommend looking for Internet security, the difference between Anti-virus and internet security is that internet security has a built in firewall and instead of letting threats come straight into your system, it has a chance to get them before reaching your system.

I second that.

After what i have heard from my professors: There is no anti-virus software that is so much better than Avast! or AVG that its worth spending money on. Personally i dont know the difference, though im not saying there isnt one.

Me, i use Linux.

"Best" is subjective, depends on individual taste, necessity, finance, and capabilities of Anti Virus, such as performance and detection.
I have use
several Anti Virus. The last that I use on Windows (Windows 7) is Norton 360, because it has PC Tune Up.
Now, I am using Fedora with Nod32 for Linux installed.
I know Linux doesn't need Anti Virus, but I prefer to use it. :P

I will say AVAST for sure. If you are a geek though you will do more than just avast and check things yourself.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free and I haven't noticed any clunkiness from it

I finally decided to run Windows Update yesterday (I never used Windows Update before), and I just realized that it installed Microsoft Security Essentials, along with some other things (ie Zune). So far, it hasn't been causing me trouble, unlike McAfee. So yeah, you could try uninstalling the old anti-virus and running Windows Update (unless you have dial-up - it has to download like ~/> 600 MB first).

I haven't had a virus in a very long time. I used to use nod32 but I'm getting cheaper in my old age.
I use MSE, with the combination of CCLeaner, spybot S&D or malwarebytes.

In the end, just be careful of what websites you're about to open.

I tried different antivius like Norton, AVG, and I'm currently using Eset Nod32 and it works well. Norton is quite heavy for me it needs a lot of memory space to run better and when I scan the whole computer I can't do anything on my computer. AVG works well too but it expires.
