PHP is know for its popularity in web applications and development of sites....but some people speculates that Python is taking its place.
What do you say on it?
Also given the popularity of PHP in social networking sites can give the name of some open source sites in python?

This sounds like the start of another language war.
I see people arguing about ASP.NET vs ColdFusion, Classic ASP vs ASP.NET, PHP vs all of them, JSP vs RoR, etc, etc, etc. In general, it really depends on what your doing, what the scalability requirements are, what the website is being hosted on, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.

Python is less supported, and contains much less in built features for web development (save for a framework like Django)
It is perfectly valid to create some web application in Python, it is just slower in the end, a lot broader use as a scripting language (for example not much on opcode caching or compiled modules such as PHP)
