I recently decided to backup all my important stuff on my laptop to my server. SO I opened Filezilla switched on VSFTPD (No ssl than you very much certificate signing instructions!).
Anyway i queued 320 MiB (is that megabyte or megabit) to be uploaded to my server. The server is sitting about 2 foot from my lappy and my wireless router is in the room next door i get 3-4/5 bars.
Anyway 1 hour and 10 minutes later I have 200 MiB left I'm not surprised as we have a airport express (ever since then networking has been hell, only my server's Ubuntu environment runs, still it does struggle and well I have Vista on my laptop: it is indeed hell on earth). SO i guess that's 'bout 10megabit / 6 minute on a LAN Christ! Flightgear which is like 200MiB downloaded faster over the internet than that (and I live on an island!).

Vista+Airport Express = :(
Please, write clearly with proper structure. Double spacing makes the text feel un-jointed, Capitalizing Every Word Means People Stop Before Every Word Sub-Consciously Which Is A Pain In The Backside, and use code tags! (The right most styling box).

First of all I would ensure your wireless router is signalling on a channel that is unused by other clients (your country may have channels 1-13), and as well is signalling in an 802.11 mode such as G or preferably N.

If this is the case, you can verify what your wireless client (your server) is using with the iwconfig command, for example you can force it to a rate of 7MB/s
sudo iwconfig ath0 rate 7M
This would assume your wireless card were named ath0, it could be eth0, eth1, wlan0, vlan0 which are just a few other examples.

You can then test this with a direct connection to verify you achieve at least over 5MBps speeds. Any number of issues could be wrong, starting from the basics are a good start.
