I'm taking a class at my high school to learn Java. The book we're using is Computing Concepts with Java Essentials. A free ebook that is linked around here a lot are the free Thinking in series. Here's the link to the Java version. Bruce Eckel's MindView, Inc: Free Electronic Book: Thinking in Java, 3rd Edition. Oracle also has a repository of tutorials that are very helpful. Here's the link for that, The Java™ Tutorials. Also, while programming it's useful to have the Java API, which is found here Java Platform SE 7 b133

Oh i had problems at first with learning java cus i think myself its very hard to find guides or tutorials on the internet that actualy teach you how to program in this language but i went to the library and got some random java book ("The Java Bible") and start reading but it doesn't help you if you only read you also have to try program yourself doesn't matter if you just write a small window that says hello or whatever you need to experiment and try new things this helped me alot!
Also very nice guides at Oracle's webpage.

I learned Java by asking my instructor LOTS of questions. But this method only works if you have a good instructor. If you're not lucky in that, then ask lots of questions on this forum. You learn best by surrounding yourself with experts, and while I don't claim that title for myself, there are plenty of experts here.
