Hi guys. The other day I was approached by a guy who asked me to design and program a website for him which would allow visitors to register for a free subdomain and create a website of their own by dragging objects(menu, text block, pic...) around. I would like to ask ur oppinions on that.
The reason for asking is because I think that I would have to use javascript and CSS to do all the work, is that right? If so, will the performance of the server be reduced? Does it take a long time to code (as Im working alone and I have to design and coding, this is extremely important issue)? Anything you want to add is also very appreciated.
P/S: awesome looking forum. Im new member here and I think Im gonna stick around. Cheers.
Need some advices on creating a website featuring drag & drop elements

This website kind of sounds like Weebly - Create a free website and a free blog. I think you are looking to design a WYSIWYG editor (What you see is what you get, drag and drop system).
Firstly the server speed won't be reduced because of the JavaScript because JavaScript is client-side, meaning it is run on the viewers computer. If the CSS is not static(e.g. its in a CSS not a PHP file) then I shouldn't see why that should lag it either.
I also think you should add password protected pages, PHP, .htaccess support and sql databases as these are very useful.

ya, that was wat I was thinking about, PHP + MySQL + javascript + CSS. My client does want something like Weebly. After doing some searching around, I found this link Create customizable web interfaces with the jQuery UI and Ajax , which allows me to do wat i want (I think) using jQuery and Ajax. As I always try to avoid javascript, this put me off a bit. Is there any other solution, say, using PHP?
If not, can I do something like this: use javascript to get positions and properties of elements after the user works on them, then store those positions and properties in MySQL so that the layout can be loaded next time the user comes back? Cheers.
