Hi everyone, I am new to the site and am enjoying all the great information here. I wanted to get some suggestions on a project that my software engineering class will be developing through the semester.

Our background: MIS and CIS majors, all are seniors and have had 1 year of java programming some have asp.net and VB experience. We are all also learning XHTML/HTML, Java script and MySQL.

The project: Build something similar to orbits.com or Kayak.com where you search for a flight and purchase a ticket.


We have started to develop our list of functions after a “mock” requirements meeting with all stakeholders.

Basically we need to allow the user to search for flights(2 different airline DB’s), present the user with the info, and allow the user to then sort and filter the results.
Then allow them to log into/create a user account, and purchase the ticket.

My question is what systems/languages would you use to develop this project?

Most likely we will use MySql for the DB’s and our prof has encouraged us to use java for most of the project, but I am not sure how we can integrate that into the website 'presentation tier'?

We are not going to use VB since most of us have developed something similar using that before and we are being pushed to learn and use new things.

We are encouraged to use as many available resources including open source code and API’s
