Hey allz!
I'm trying to build a desktop workstation for two reasons - it looks better(you'll see why) and it's more comfortable to develop on, but I'm not really planning to develop on it. w/e.
First, take a look at this -
Welcome - Synergy
This program is so l33t... I wanna use it to create a dual-monitor Windows-Linux workstation together with my cluster project. I already have everything planned and the only thing I'm waiting for is the PCs. The problem is that I don't know which plan to chose.
Plan 1 -
One of the systems will be the server - it'll have a keyboard, a mouse, and a webcam. It will also have a shared HDD. Both computers are connected to a switch, so internet access is always available on both. I don't like this plan because one system will have to act as a server, which isn't very comfortable because the computers are old and very weak.
Plan 2 -
Not power efficient, but kinda smart - implement another PC in the setup. The third PC will act as a server. It will have the keyboard/mouse, webcam and shared HDD connected into it. It will have 2 network cards - one for internet access, and one for a switch. The switch will connect the 3 PCs with a private network. The biggest advantage of this is that Linux and Windows will be workstations - thus independent of each other. Also, the server will have many free resources so it can act like a firewall. The server will need to be on for the other computers to function properly.
I think that the second plan is kinda fun, but since the server will have no monitor Synergy will ignore it. Basically, it can't use it's own keyboard/mouse and the only way to use it is VNC or something. It's kinda dumb. The first plan is more power-efficient, which is important.
What do you guys think?
Yours, Mike.

There is no problem that cannot be solved by the use of high explosives.

lol it's ok :)
I've been having some legal problems with the computers. It turns out that the computers belong to the country and not to the school, so once they're out of date they're being sent back to wherever they came from, or more likely just thrown in a storage room because the director's too lazy to send them back[it's a very big complicated deal]. So even if the school does have the computers somewhere, they don't have permission to give it to me[I imagine the guy who's responsible to this mess with a trollface going "Problem student?"]. Crap, I'll have to find out what organization is responsible and ask them. I'm getting a bad feeling about this...

Hurray!
I just got 8 computers today, plus one that I had laying around. I'm gonna get 2 more this Friday. There you have it, 11 computers for free. Tomorrow I'm also gonna get monitors - two for me, two for my friends and one for the cluster project. Then some keyboards/mouses. Again, all free.
My dad was like 'WDF?!' When me and 3 of my friends walked into our apartment holding 2 PCs each, he was so MAD he almost threw them out of the window

Well, if you hook up all of those old things, be prepared for a nice electric bill!
I am not sure what on earth you would use Synergy for, it just looks like a dual monitor but across computers.. only one can be used at a time then?
