I'm interested in getting started doing some bug fixes (for now) for some open source projects. I started looking through the bug list for some of the more popular open source projects (ie: Google Chrome), but the bugs there are way over my head.

I'm curious how other people have gotten their start with larger projects. Did you dive in head first and hope you figure it out, or do you look for something smaller (a more obscure open source project) and start with something more in your skill set.

Personally I'm leaning towards the slightly smaller projects so I actually have a chance at contributing.
