Hey all.
I recently discovered that the battery life Asus promised me is far from the real thing. They said it's up to 10 hours, while I only have 6. It draws me crazy.
I use my computer for three things - reading, programming and browsing the web. I have a creative solution - DOS. It doesn't use too many resources, and with Win3.1 installed it can do all I need. Linux can too, with a basic windowing system but I like Win3.1 so it has to be similar. I tried installing MS-DOS, PC-DOS and FreeDOS and had errors with all of them. I think the best solution is booting Linux in CLI mode and running DOSbox or something.
I'm trying to get myself a basic low-performance system with high battery life, that can browse the web, read books[I prefer pdfs] and program. If I'll be able to emulate networking with Win3.1, it's perfect.
But will the battery life really be better? If it won't then the whole effort is for nothing. I'm using the Asus EeePC 1015PEM. The full specs are in the link.
Thanks all, Mike.

There is no problem that cannot be solved by the use of high explosives.

A CLI based Linux with a PDF to Postscript converter for viewing (or anyformat, whatever your poison) will get you the maximum battery life, along with lowest possible brightness and low thresholds to turn off the screen when idle, but that will ruin the experience somewhat to get 10 hours.
Win 3.11 only supports dialup IIRC, and dosbox is an emulator so it naturally uses up cpu cycles, so those are not really options.

Thanks. I'll try doing it right after I'll finish setting up Gentoo.

I hope you don't have an ATI graphics card, I gave up installing Gentoo because I couldn't get it to work with it correctly. And using genkernel eliminates the point of Gentoo.
