What exactly did you want to learn about it? I can share some experiences, but I'm not an expert by any means. I have successfully sold a couple of domains in $$$$ range.

Well, you can start from the basics. What is the process? You buy a domain, and then sell it?

Exactly. You buy a domain that seems most likely a specific company would want. You put an add onto the domain and you sell it. It can get more complicated if you get into advertising and things like that.

How do you know that someone would want the domain? And for how much would you want to sell it for?

You don't know. You'll buy hundreds of domains and sell a few. The ones you sell will cover the cost of other domains. Since you buy a domain for $10/year and sell for much more than that.

Ohh, so it's all about looking for a good domain name, and since you're holding it, you can sell it for however much you want. I get it now. It sounds like a cool idea. I might try it. But how much can you make from doing this? And what types of methods would you use to advertise your domain? Is this how companies like GoDaddy work?

I agree. Most domainers either buy to hold (advertise) or buy to sell (good, relevant SEO names, etc.).
A good way to find domains is through someone like Download Daily List of Expiring Domain Names and Domain Name Auctions . You can see what domains are "dropping" / expiring and buy them to resell. Sometimes, great domain names are dropped without being renewed. It's a competitive market, though.

Hm.. that's the holy grail of domaining. Normally, someone who is experienced would scope out the buyers first, then buy the domain. That way, the money is made before the domain is ever purchased! An example of this would be an (unsolicited) email I got recently:

Good point, BlaineSch.. the few will pay for the many. I have ~30 domains (some parked, some used) and I recently sold a domain for $$$$ (4-figures), which paid for the whole portfolio. I tried a few other ways to sell the others, but it wasn't as successful. The tricky part is always down to finding buyers and setting a starting price. A good resource on this would be sedo.com

The money you make really depends on your experience and luck. I bought a domain from a dude before. He showed me his "sold" list for the last 30-days ==> it was ~$30,000+ for less than $1,000 in registration fees. He's an example of someone who is experienced.
To advertise, use DNForum.com - Welcome to Dnforum resources.
GoDaddy is a domain registrar. They mainly register domains for end-users, but they do also hold on to domains for resell. I think it's a crooked business, since they get a first look at all the expiring domains and get to keep them for "practically" free.

One more question:
How exactly do I buy a domain. From companies like godaddy? Or just pick up any expired domain un-owned?

I personally use GoDaddy. But I do know many professional domainers use enom or moniker.
