In new year like now or in other special moments, many software vendors give (very) big discounts and/or (very) big benefits to their new customers. Then, how with their existing customers that have purchased before discount given? Or, this is only marketing strategy to get more money and more customers?

In my opinion, the existing customer should be given more special thing than new customer, like free upgrade to major version, free extended validation for 1 year, or other special thing. Do not let our customers regret after buying our products.

How about your opinion?
Or, any of you that have experience with selling your softwares?

Well with Adobe for instance, when they sell a copy of Photoshop you get a huge discount when buying the next version. Like $900 for a normal person down to $200 if you have the previous edition. I think this, or free update's should be givin to existing customers, and if you dont want to give them free updates for life, you could have a 1 year subscription to free upgrades. Then of course you would offer the good sales and discounts to bring in new customers.

Thats just my opinion, although I dont have any experience selling software....yet! :D

With games, I've always felt that it wasn't worth $30 to be one of the first to play. I could wait for the price to drop by that much. Of course, I paid in delayed gratification, but so be it.

That's totally depend on the value of the product base on your timeframe. E.g. if you are about to build tax report which require new rules, then you have to purchase accounting software which supports that new rules as soon as possible, cause usually late tax report submissions result in penalties. :) However for some products like game as WP's mentioned, no problem to wait for price drop.
