Hey guys.
I've just got a new netbook, and I have some ideas.
First, I'm gonna install Linux. I opened another thread, but when partitioning the hard drive I found a ~16GB volume with an unknown format. If I'm not mistaken, I think it has something to do with Express Gate. Is it safe to format it? I really hate garbage on my hard drive...
Second, I'm a natural hacker. I like, um... "exploring my creative side", if you see what I mean. I wanted to get an external hard drive to carry my code and OS with me, but it's no longer relevant because of my netbook. I still wanna have access to my data with USB, so I came up with a great idea.
There are three USB ports on the machine - one on the left, two on the right. What I wanna do is to open up my Eee PC, and link the hard drive to the USB on the left. I'm gonna try to somehow split the hard drive's cable to the motherboard, so the PC will work as normal, and to a USB adapter which will be wired to the USB port.
How can I keep my warranty after doing it?
How can I split a SATA cable?
What's a USB device that I can wire to the original wires, from the motherboard? I don't wanna waste a USB port... A good example is bluetooth, but I have it built in.
And, even if it all will work, what happens if I connect the hard drive while the computer is on?
I'm gonna digg up as much info as I can before I start, if I'll ever do it.
Thanks for any useful info, Mike.

There is no problem that cannot be solved by the use of high explosives.

If it is, the express gate isn't very important, you can even disable it in your BIOS.

Possible, as long as you have set the boot priority to USB device.

Warrantys wont be voided if its software wise, but as soon as you open your laptop your warranty's gone (as in warranty sticker removed or ripped, or if the manufacture can tell that its been opened)
