Hi! I've just finalized a couple of deals with two local businesses to design websites for them & I'm really excited about it. :c-biggrin:
It was pretty hard getting it done as they were apprehensive when I told them I was a student.
This is the first time I will be actually implementing all my website building skills so I don't want to let them down.
I searched the forum for a thread as to how I could go about it better but couldn't find anything of that sort...
It would be really helpful if you'll could give me some ideas/tips/advice that would guide me through these projects.
The first one is a pretty straightforward css/flash website which I'm relatively confident about. The second involves use of databases to create a catalogue for the store...
Looking forward to your posts!

What will both your sites be about? The flash/css one seems like it will be a portfolio methinks.

Thanks! I am bad with design tips, but all the ones I can think of are here:
Website Design Tips | What to do, and what NOT to do
I quite agree with most of them, for example minimizing Flash and using maybe Javascript/JQuery for animation could make it look very new and nice.

I don't consider myself as a web designer. But I did learn/read a lot about web design. So if you could show us your work progress perhaps we could contribute something to your design.
My first tip is, don't afraid to use extra white space. But also don't overuse them!
Cheers!

Thanks Nullw0rm for the website design tips link ... I find it very useful.
Red Lightning - in the previous startup I worked with my husband, we desperately wanted to have a professionally designed header to replace the very generic template header, but we couldn't afford hiring a professional designer. So, I went to Gimp forum and posted a request offering just a little bit of cash. I got a response and started communicating with the responder. As it turned out, he is a 15-year-old kid ... who did a really great job! Both my husband and I were very happy with the result, unfortunately, our other partners weren't that attentive to design details ... and they kind of brushed the kid off when they knew that he was just 15. So, all I want to say is that yes, there are people who just judge others by some very superficial and unrelated standards. But if you have the talent and are willing to work, you would get the appreciation you deserve. :-)
