Bleh, I keep changing my mind. I still have like a week till I'm buying a computer, and I've just heard of something called a "nettop". It's basically a desktop made with netbook parts. Weird isn't it?

I'm gonna use my computer for C and Assembler with Gentoo Linux on it so it's not gonna need some serious specs. I hate flashy GUI like on Win 7(take a look at my thread here). The problem I'm facing now is portability vs. screen+keyboard+screen. I mean, netbooks are portable, it's a plus - but their problem is a trackpad, small keyboard and screen. If I'll get a netttop, it won't be portable but it'll serve as a more comfortable workstation. (I'd hate to buy external I/O devices for a netbook, because if I'm choosing it I'm choosing portability as-is - being able to use it anywhere).

I Googled for a solution for like a hour and found nothing. Perhaps you have an opinion that you'd like to share?

Thanks, Mike.

And I forgot to mention, is it possible to have a 2.5" SSD together with the original one on any netbook? I just really want 1337 boot speed.

Nettop is a bit silly? A dual core PC with 17 inch monitor costs roughly $300-450 now.. I would stick to either a comfortable (proper) workstation or a netbook for its portability and mainly low cost.

SSD is kinda pushing it in my opinion, it is not directly related to anything with a low cost system.

Then I'll go with netbooks. Nettops are cool, but I agree - a bit silly too. It's still awesome to have an iMac-like PC.
By the way, remember when I posted the "Building a pocket linux system" thread? It's still at the first page(The Lounge). What I was looking for is a nettop - it's small, portable, can operate w/o input devices. I could easily build a home(LAN) server if I had one.

Also, SSD has no moving parts. Not that I'll be traveling, but it really helps on a train or an airplane. And, like I said - it gives you 1337 boot speed, lol.

Sounds neat. My 1987 IBM laptop boots Gentoo in three hours, and it was $3.5k ($780 for 1.4GB HDD?) :) You should feel lucky.

Trust me I do, now.
God, three hours? I hope it's not your main workstation.
