I just upgraded my latitude d600 to windows 7 and now I have noticed a problem. It took me a while because I don't use my dvd drive much but I noticed that the thing only works when the computer is booting up. Best as I can tell, it work through BIOS and then quit's. You can see it in windows but if you click on it it acts like there's no disc in it (even if you put one in while it's booting). There are no lights on on it. It doesn't even make noise like it's spinning a disc. I've tried updating the drive but it just tells me it's already up to date. Any ideas?
P.S. Also tried taking the whole thing out and putting it back in.
Strange drive problem

I was about to suggest drivers but yeah I mean other than that I have no idea... Tried reinstalling Win7? Been in contact with MS or the drive manufacturer?

I haven't re-installed 7 pretty much cuz i'm to lazzy. :) I can't call MS because my copy isn't legally activated (yet). And I haven't contacted the drive manufacturer because.
A. It works fine In BIOS so you know it works fine on the hardware end.
B. If there was any chance that there WAS something wrong with the drive its self, I would buy a new one for $3 on ebay. :)
just a quick thought: what about downgrading the driver?;making it more general. Are any almost universal drive drivers :) out there?

I would start with this really long url and to find your drive's driver (there's a cd/dvd driver section). As you can see there are many different dvd devices your laptop uses in different submodels, Windows just was not able to find the appropriate generic one.
