I'd like recommendations on some good free strategy games (playing against the computer) that I can load on my ipod touch and play.

Search Eliminate in the App Store and there are a bunch by ngmoco, I've tried one of them and they're pretty good.

I would like to suggest you to go with Fieldrunners

If you're into chess, Shredder is a fantastic app for it. The computer will automatically adjust it's playing strength based on your skill, and will keep a record of how you've done in all the games. There's a lot of other features like online endgames and tips on the next best move. Great wee app in general.

I don't really have an ipod touch, but I would assume just searching tower defense would turn up alot of options :)

There are some great tower defense games - Fieldrunners, Plants vs Zombies, the Creeps, and standard old "Tower Defense" haha. Pretty addictive games right there.
