I'd like to learn programming for a specific project I'd like to attempt to do myself and perhaps with help from other programmers. First however, I'd like to know what sort of programming languages would be required to do the project.
Here's my project idea:
I'd like to create something that's a combination of a social network and a fantasy game in which everyone gets a superhero ability with "poke" actions, people will have profiles with a wall for others to post comments, people can add friends, use actions, and an action feed. After this other features will be added such as groups, travel, and a battle system.
In essence, it would somewhat resemble MafiaWars on Facebook, except its a bit more complex and more "live and interactive". I then plan to perhaps make this social game available on an iFrame canvas application on Facebook.
I've heard C++ can get me started in learning some programming... What would you suggest for me to learn some programming online for this idea I have?

Welcome to CodeCall!
C++ is a compiled and generally only offline language. PHP and MySQL + database management skills would be required. I thought I would point out Mafia wars like apps were developed by dozens of contractors and the application was deployed on large networks of cloud computers, I cannot imagine any single person being able to develope anything near that with no previous programatic experience.

Welcome aboard! If you want to make a website, I'd start with PHP.

I think you'll have to learn PHP like someone has said and Flash, you won't be needing C. You might also have to first learn HTML, CSS, JavaScript etc.
