I currently have a BS degree in Industrial Engineering. Ive been working as a designer for the past 8 years designing machinery. Ive always been a "computer geek" and enjoy writing programs for the engineering department whenever i have the opportunity. Im also the "computer guru" for the department and my family. Im at a point in my life where im looking for change, something different. I am no longer happy with what I do at work. Its hard to change careers when I dont have any experience in the IT field. I did take a C++ class at a local university, made the highest grade in the class. I also checked how long it would take me to get another degree, which would around 3 years given the course schedule.

Is it worth going back to school to get a BS in Computer Science? Are there any certifications that I can take instead?

Just looking for some comments/suggestions/tips.

Thanks

Zak

Welcome aboard!

I have a degree in math (MS) and got a job programming by getting hired at a software company to do documentation/training and then demonstrating that I can program. Once you get some experience, it gets easier to find the next job.
Programming is a branch of mathematics.

Hi codedemon, welcome to CodeCall. I actively monitor programming job related mailing lists in the Manhattan area, and I have been seeing a common consensus among many of the employers. I think it is summed up quite eloquently in the following quote snipped from an email I received three days ago:

My company is also in the market for someone with similar skills, however education is not a requirement - just knowing how to make things well is.
