Hi,

I've never been in any kind of community, and i thought it was about time to join one if I'm to become a good programmer/developer. so hello!

Not much to say about myself; always loved working with computers, very lazy, learning programming (every possible language i can). Currently I'm interested in web programming (php, js, sql, etc..).

I don't know if it's appropriate to ask for help in this section of the forum, but I'd like to hear what kind of ideas you guys have for a college project. I had an imageboard, simple blog, and a "yahoo! answers! like site in mind but since I don't have much prior experiecne with web development i didn't know if those ideas were too complex for me to finish by the end of this year.
Already got a server set up with mysql and I'm studying PHP so i can start working as soon as possible. Thanks :)

Welcome mushroom, it's awesome that you are working with PHP it is a great language (lots to do and its simple as can be). Hmm, I like what you suggested to do, I was thinking of writing a microblogging platform (like twitter) as a side project that I can grow and use it as an example of my coding as needed, you may want to utilize a source revision system such as git, it would be good practise and look good if your professor is digging into the dev process.

Yes i agree, was watching video lectures on PHP yesterday and it was amazing how many useful functions it has and how easy the syntax was to understand. Never used a source revision system, and i don't really know how it works but i will keep that in mind! (Wikipedia time)
Off to college now, C++ class :) Thanks for the welcome!

EDIT: Turns out class is at 1700.. Guess i'll continue watching those videos until then. What do you guys think about the above ideas? too complex for a newbie in web development to finish by the end of this year?
