Howdy. I am completely new to programming, and am attempting to learn it on my own.

One question that always bothered me:
How do certain input devices register input? such as a Bill acceptor at a casino, or a desktop scanner, or a mouse? Specifically, about the bill validator, how can it compare what the program "knows" the bill looks like, and what the bill it is scanning looks like? I mean, how is an image, or details and security devices rendered as coded information?

Thanks for any help, this has been irking me for ages.
