It depends on the software, but I wouldn't use a no-name site in India.

Free download sites help you get some backlinks. Good for traffic too.
Download.com is a good one. I think you will need a software submitter to do a good job a submitting to download sites.
Don't forget about making a pad file. Use Padgen to make one.
I would skip sites that require a link to them. You do not know how spamy the site is.
