after dealing with yet another staffing agency to find work, i learned yesterday according to the woman i dealt with, that the IT field was "flooded" and finding work would be very difficult.

maybe this is just in my area, maybe it isnt even true, but as of now i find myself stumbled.. trying to decide if continuing to pursue a job in IT would lead me to a useless investment of time and money.

what are your opinions?

other info: im in the houston, texas area

I would say that is mainly because of the economy. I was looking at jobs in php for my career development class before the economy took a plunge I literely watched it go from hundreds of jobs (just within 30 miles of my house) to 5 jobs (on career builder) within a month.

Do you have your degree yet? If so burger flipping is probably out. I was told I am over qualified to flip burgers when i tried for McDonalds.

no, unfortunately i am one of the many 20+ year olds who acted like a jackass in college for a few years then got kicked out of ole mom and dads house. reality is a stiff wack on the head at a point like that.. ive worked construction for the last year slowly trying to position myself back into school, but even now just any job is hard to find. im registered in 4 staffing agencies yet nothing yet.

I'm not "up to date" in the IT job industry, but I'm pretty sure no one field of work can be totally flooded. I mean If you looking for a job in IT you should just need to be better than the next guy. I just did a job search for IT in the general Houston area. Might this link help? Honestly Atheium, if I really had a passion for programming and I wanted to make that what I did for a living I would make my own company. Not like really big and etc, but more like a little independent developer type thing. If you (and a small team if you can gather em) make good programs and people like them you could make money. I know its much more easily said than done, but I'm just throwing ideas out there. Whatcha think?

Serious? Here there are TONNES of jobs in IT, NZ and Australia. I definitely think that it's worth pursuing IT since IMO it's the career that determines a lot of the future. If there's a lack of jobs in IT in Texas and you love IT then maybe moving to a different state would be.. worth your while?

@TC id love to start a company, but the ability to survive is closer to mind at the moment, i need something to pay for the roof and such.

@Lor well perhaps i have a gleam of hope.. new zealand as ive heard of it is very beautiful, but that would be quite a trip from texas!

all in all im mulling over my distant future whilst worrying over my current prediciment of needing work. i spose we shall see what comes of it.
