My CD drive seems to have problems detecting certain cds. I recently bought few blank cds but it is not getting recognized. My old cds are being read though. What could be the reason for this odd behavior ?

It could be a dirty lens, a laser diode that's wearing out, a weak laser, a cheaper CD-ROM, etc.

How should we do ?
( I will try to fix it myself as far as I could, go to computer service is my last option ).

There are lens cleaners, if it's just a dirty lens. If you have a weak laser or dying diode, there's not much to do short of replacing the drive.

I have a DVD unit who reads now only CDs (not working anymore with DVDs). the guy from the service told me that the laser had "moved" a little bit and it cannot be fixed. His solution was a new unit.

It happens to me only because those DVDs are cheap. My father used to work as a freelance video shooter. I used the expensive DVD that he uses for his videos, and they worked fine.

But if your drive is too old, it's time to consider a new unit, by all means.

I think it's not the lens because you can see your data on your other disc so it means it can still read them. So my advice is try other brand of discs
