I was just pondering...with all the javascript, css, mysql, html and of course php + information (and I am using some c# from time to time :) - it seems close to impossible to create website closely related to facebook, bebo, etc in less than...a month. I know one can use free systems and things. But writing it from scratch (and of course copy-pasting the javascript :) - it's just not possible for a single human to do it in short time, like weeks. Basically, i have some serious amound of code from previous projects on very similar websites (dating related, answers), but I had to rewrite over 80% of them. And i am asking since my current boss says he is extreemely satisfied by the code quality i am doing, but "i could work faster" in his opinion...anyway. Google doesn't give enough information about "time" and "work force" needed to create such websites...only how much money is invested in facebook.

It depends a little on how you define it, and what your skill is. You can get a basic site up in a month of 40 hour weeks, but it will NOT be as feature rich as FaceBook.

I believe in Steve McConells book Software Estimation, he states the average programmer writes 10 lines of production worthy code a day.

Actually, on good days, I delete more code than I write.

Depends on your skills and specialities.
I'd say that an experienced web developer can create a full social website in 2-3 weeks. That includes fancy javascript and design.
