This forum really needs a graphics section.. What do you all think?

Something like this maybe?

I totally agree! Every site should have some area where users can show off their art.

This is a programming forum, we can show stuff off in the lounge. It already has too many boards from the merge with the linux forum (X_x)

Lol, maybe you don't understand the fact that Programming and Graphics go hand in hand. Graphics originated from programming. The lounge is not a graphics section or to show stuff off, it is for socializing not showing stuff off. It is only used to show stuff off because their is no other place to do it.

programmer != graphic designer Most programmers can't do good art, most artist can't program it uses diffrent parts of the brain. Graphics btw originated from art (3D modeling == sculpting, photoshoping == painting, collaging, and so on) Programs just gave artist the ability to use there craft on the computer. for example I have tried and tried to do 3D modeling, I know a lot of the technical stuff and how to make everything but I rarely make anything that is good. That is why when people make home brewed video games (good ones) they have a graphics person, a sound person, a programmer, and so on. We as programmers may be able to do decent graphics but we will never make amazing graphics (there of course is an exception to every rule, in this case we know Jann is talented in both design and programming)

The lounge is for hanging out. No one will complain if you show off your graphics there. If you need help with graphics join a graphics forum, there are people on them that do graphics for a living and can probably help you a lot more than a group of computer gods programmers

That is completely false. Maybe "you" don't have the potential to use your brain in it's full capacity. But, that does not mean any and all programmers can never make amazing graphics. I am a fairly intelligent programmer and have the capability of being an amazing one if I wanted to. I am also talented in graphics and have self taught myself the programs to do everything I am capable of today with them. I will be going to college for graphics and combining my Graphics and Programming skills. So, yes any and all programmers and graphics designers have the capability to learn both. It is a matter of how much time and effort you put into it and if you like doing it.

As for my comment about graphics originating from programming. I was merely pointing out that graphics "on computers" originated from programming and programmers. Computer graphics would have never been possible without programming. Which is pretty funny, because I guarantee you the programmers who made Maya, Blender, and all other 3D software have AMAZING graphics talent.

Why can't polls be debated?

In my opinion, the creation of images using a programming language (e.g. the OpenGL libraries for C++) can be put into their respective forum, but graphic art in general is different from programming, so I don't see why they need their own section. What's wrong with them being in the lounge again?

Yes, they are different but work together. Let me ask you this.. How come their is a marketing section? Marketing and Programming are different. So, why don't we just get rid of that all together? My point is, if its put in the lounge it is just going to get buried by all the other spam.. A graphics section would allow people to put their art up and have it stay their specifically for people who are interested in graphics instead of letting their stuff get buried by pointless lounge threads.

Also, this could open up potential projects. Programmers / Graphics designers could team up and work on group projects. How many people here are good programmers and have been looking for a graphics person? I have seen various posts about that. It just seems like it would be nice for the board to have one.

Also, I was not saying we can't debate the poll. It is what the poll is for. Debating the TOPIC. Not debating some other tangent that has no relevance whatsoever to the initial discussion.

I was trying to be nice yesterday in your sig section saying your sig was ok. But sence you bring it up unless you can do better then that your not talented at design. Also the people who made maya would be talented at programming not nesisarily graphics. Programmers can build tools to make things that they are no good at doing. Programming is our art.

And your right i can't use the full capacity of my brain few people can if any. I don't like to post these but sence it is relevent i will. here are some of my models that i consider sucky and i belive to be a bit more creative then a few lightring effects on auto generated text that has been slightly tweeked:

I have no delusions about my skills, I am still a n00b at programming after all these years and even wors at graphics. I don't like being mean but you really should learn the diffrence in being good at somthing and still being a newbie.

Nor do I like being rude, never once did I say the signature I made was AMAZING. I said I wanted something simple (Also, if you did not think it was good you should have posted your original thoughts on it). I am not holding a competition of who is the best, those are still pretty decent and yes I can do way more then just add light effects to some text. But, none of this has anything to do with the initial topic of having a graphics section or not. I think you have some decent talent and I think if you put more time and effort into it you could become very skilled in the arts of graphics. I am pretty newbie in the arts of programming myself because it is not something I plan on going with in the future. But, it does not mean that I couldn't become a master at both programming and graphics if I really wanted it.

1)I did not post my opinion because I try to be nice with out giving people too much unwarnted credit (hence i said it was ok, not great) nor being completely blunt (my actual opinion).
2) I don't have talent at graphics and never will.
3) You brought up your "talent" with graphics, I brought up a rebutle
4) It has everything to do with your argument that a lot of programmers are good with graphics..... their not except a select few
5) Join a graphics forum if you want to learn and show off graphics.
6) Once again this is a PROGRAMMING forum not an art forum, not a linux forum (or it wasnt when i joined), not a book forum ; a programming forum.

Alright, well you are entitled to your opinion and I am entitled to mine. Yes, this is a programming forum and its fine that the MAIN topics of the forum should be about programming. It does not mean that their should be no other sections.

That is like saying, we shouldn't have a lounge because this isn't a socializing forum it is strictly for programming, or that we shouldn't have Off-Topic areas because it is strictly a programming forum. Maybe it does not need its own entire section, but I still think their should at least be a sub-forum somewhere devoted to graphics or art of that nature. Event if it is a sub-forum within the Lounge.
